Automatic Blocking Offensive Student-feedback

Great to share another media coverage of our machine learning research! This "abuse detection" research started by finding a solution for identifying misogynistic tweets in 2019 -2020 with QUT researchers from DMRC and then finding a commercial solution for iShield.ai in identifying a bias (racial, age, gender, etc) for expression in general posts in 2020 - 2021. And now applying in another useful application. Excited about where this research will take us next.

Our work on automatic blocking "offensive student-feedback" has been featured on Australian "Campus Review" and they published a Podcast on it.

নারী বিদ্বেষ (ইংরেজি: Misogyny) হল নারীর প্রতি ঘৃণা বা বিরাগ মনোভাব। অ্যালান জি জনসন ও অন্যান্য সমাজবিজ্ঞানীরা মনে করেন নারী বিদ্বেষ একটি সাংস্কৃতিক মনোভাব যেখানে নারীকে শুধু নারী হওয়ার কারণে ঘৃণা করা হয়, কম যোগ্য মনে করা হয় বা ন্যায্য অধিকার থেকে বঞ্চিত করা হয়। এটি শুধু নারীর প্রতি তীব্র বিদ্বেষই প্রকাশ করে না সেই সাথে তাদের প্রতি কুসংস্কারও জুড়ে দেয়। সমাজে নারী বিদ্বেষ বিভিন্নভাবে প্রকাশ পেতে পারে এবং নারীর বিকাশে নারী-বিদ্বেষ একটি বড় বাধা এবং সামাজিক সমস্যা। এ সম্পর্কিত শিক্ষা, সামাজিক জাগরণ এবং আইনি পদক্ষেপ সমাজকে এই সমস্যা থেকে বের করে আনতে পারে।

Marketing made easy with algorithmic learning

The future of marketing is robotic.

Associate Professor Richi Nayak (a program leader with QUT’s Centre for Data Science) and her research team (Dr Md Abul Bashar and Mr Hendi Li) have combined artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data to develop a prototype of data-driven marketing platform called Robotic Marketer.

Dr Nayak and her team worked with Australian company Marketing Eye to design and develop a platform that recommends purpose-driven marketing activities based on past report analyses, and company and competitor profiles.

The resarch team developed a novel system of automated task allocation within Robotic Marketer’s server to streamline the information-gathering process, allowing the platform to complete multiple simultaneous requests and retrieve large amounts of data, which it then translates into consumer-friendly output. 

Algorithm for Detecting Misogynistic Posts Targeting Women

 

Online abuse targeting women, including threats of harm or sexual violence, has proliferated across all social media platforms but QUT researchers have developed a statistical model to help drum it out of the Twittersphere. 

Associate Professor Richi Nayak, Professor Nicolas Suzor and research fellow Dr Md Abul Bashar from QUT have developed a sophisticated and accurate algorithm to detect these posts on Twitter, cutting through the raucous rabble of millions of tweets to identify misogynistic content.
